General Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for the day to day management of all aspects of health and safety within the division
  • Review the effectiveness of safety arrangements for work activities
  • Make provision for the allocation of resources to support safety needs
  • Make arrangements for staff to be able to attend safety courses and training where required
  • Ensure that division health and safety policy procedures are implemented.
  • Establish clear communication and consultation lines for safety within the division

Division Safety Officer

General Responsibilities

  • Advise and assist the head of division in the management of all health and safety matters
  • Liaise between the division and the safety office
  • Provide advice to members of the division on health and safety matters
  • Act with the delegated authority of the head of division on matters of urgency
  • Referring promptly to the head of division and the safety office problems that cannot be resolved
  • Make arrangements for any appropriate remedial action required
  • Check that accidents are investigated and reported to the safety office and the head of division
  • Disseminating health and safety information and reports to appropriate members of staff and students
  • Check risk assessments, together with any safe working procedures, are in place and are being complied with
  • Check visitors and contractors are informed of hazards in the area and made aware of safety procedures
  • Check that, when any safety or fire equipment is seen to be missing or faulty, that prompt action is taken to remedy the fault or deficiency
  • Monitor the division to ensure that adequate precautions are implemented regarding any special existing or new hazard
  • Periodically review health and safety procedures
  • Maintain adequate health and safety records as required by any relevant statutory provisions

Division Workstation Assessor

General Responsibilities

  • Carry out assessments and advise users how they can make/use their workstations safely
  • Notify the head of division of any problems identified
  • Prioritise the allocation of resources to workstations that are causing health problems

Division Fire Officer

General responsibilities

  • Perform regular inspections of their areas to ensure the correct location of fire extinguishers, that fire doors are not propped open when not in use and to report to the Head of Division and the University Fire Officer any deficiencies.
  • To assist with routine fire evacuation practices
